Quick Test: 2009 Jaguar XF Premium Luxury

2009 Jaguar XF Front Three Quarters View

Otherwise, the standard Jag XF is virtually all the cat that the supercharged variant is. The car's poise on tight freeway on-ramps and in fast lane changes remains excellent, despite its lack of Jaguar's CATS adaptive suspension. Similarly, the brakes haul the XF down from speed with the same cool confidence and easy modulation of our supercharged long-termer, while the ride remains quiet and comfortable. Even the exhaust note stays favorable, allowing for quiet cruising, with an eager growl when pushed harder. The slick, pop-up rotary gear selector remains a fascinating touch and is delightful to use, while the car's overall build quality and superior fit and finish remains up to par with the pricier variant. In all honesty, the standard XF is all the car that at least 95% of Jaguar's customers will ever need, whether they realize it or not.

So is it worth buying a nonsupercharged XF to save some scratch? The answer depends on how fast you want to go and how many options you want. Our long-term XF Supercharged comes in at a final cost of $66,675. Subtract $2200 for the Adaptive Cruise Control that our standard XF didn't have, and you're left with a sticker price of $64,475. The nonsupercharged XF's total MSRP was $61,550, just under $3000 less, including the optional B&W premium stereo ($1875), 20-in. wheels ($2700), and Advanced Vision Package ($1000). Stripping away the options to compare base prices, we found the XF Supercharged costs $9500 more than the $55,975 that the nonsupercharged car will set you back, but makes up the majority of the price in standard features that are extra-cost options in the less-powerful car. Of course, if you're the motor-oil-in-the-veins type and intend to flog your Jag around town as the late Phil Hill might have his XK120 (you know who you are), the XF Supercharged will remain your only option.
