Norm and Mike Babcock, aka Team Iron Butt Racing, joined One Lap in 1999 under the pretext, "Someone said there would be hot chicks and free beer." The father and son team have returned each year since hoping for the fitting combination: Norm turns 75 on the first day of the event.
They'll celebrate in a 2000 Audi S4, which, the team claims, is the only yellow Audi to compete since 2000. Performance modifications include new turbochargers, RS4 intercoolers, a full cage, H&R coilovers, and StopTech brakes. The car also has doors, windshield, and a roof -- items the team says you should never take for granted.
After nine event's worth of experience, the pair has formed a solid strategy: "Don't crash, don't hit cones, don't hit deer, don't miss our run group, don't run out of gas, don't forget to drive both directions on the skidpad, don't slip a disc, don't get any tickets, don't forget to check the nut on the trailer hitch ball, don't forget not to be stupid."
