According to Spiering, "The Blind Spot Monitoring system is completely distracting. It causes me to look away from the road every time I see out of the corner of my eye the sideview-mirror lights come on. Second, when I want to change lanes, I turn on the signal and, if there's a car next to me, the BSM beeps until there's enough room to move over. Okay, I get that, but when you're in traffic and it takes a while to change lanes due to people not letting you in, that noise is totally undesirable." Senior editor Ron Kiino has a different perspective: "I find the BSM very useful. It's really a third line of defense-first, look in the mirror; second, glance over your shoulder; third, check the mirror again and, most important, look for a lighted BSM signal. If it's on, you know someone has
snuck in."
