2006 Chevrolet HHR

Chevy's much-anticipated HHR makes its official debut at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show. This two-box, heritage-influenced vehicle was inspired by both the SSR and the original 1949 Suburban to round out Chevy's small-car strategy. Like the SSR, the HHR features deep-draw, flared fenders which tuck in at the rockers for a solid, firmly-planted stance. The five-passenger vehicle is based on the Delta platform (shared with Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion), and is powered by either a 2.2-liter/140-hp or 2.4-lliter/170-hp four-cylinder Ecotec with standard five-speed tranny or available electronically controlled four-speed automatic. Like the Chrysler PT Cruiser it is gunning for, the HHR ("heritage high roof") will have a reconfigurable interior with seats that fold to create a flat load surface and clever storage solutions to accommodate everything from groceries to surfboards.

Two model levels -- LS and LT -- include standard features such as air conditioning, power windows and door locks, six-speaker CD stereo, and remote keyless entry, as well as such additional niceties as driver information center, 16.2-gallon fuel tank, and Remote start (standard with automatic transmission). Additional options include available Pioneer enhanced-performance audio system with subwoofer, large power sunroof, OnStar and XM Satellite Radio, and 16-inch and 17-inch wheel upgrades.

The 1LT model also includes a standard MP3 player, six-way power seat with power lumbar, and a satin exterior finish. Bright chrome exterior trim and a bright exhaust tip are available. ABS and traction control are available (traction control only available with automatic transmission). The HHR 2LT includes ABS, fog lamps, bright exhaust tip, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, Pioneer sound system with subwoofer, 17-inch wheels, FE3 sport suspension, and a bright chrome exterior trim. Heated leather seats also are available on both LT packages.

The HHR uses a MacPherson strut front suspension design, along with a semi-independent, torsion beam rear suspension and five-lug wheels. Two suspension systems are available for a softer (on LS and 1LT models) or sportier (standard on LT models) ride. Braking is via large front discs and rear drums, with ABS and traction control standard on 2LT models with automatic transmission and available on LS and 1LT models.

Inside, the HHR evokes a feeling of roominess and strives to create an upscale aura with detailed, jewel-like instrument displays and chrome accents. Interior color combinations feature darker colors on upper sections of the interior and lighter colors for lower sections.

Chevrolet promises the HHR will be available in the second half of 2005.
