Lexus has already established the third-generation GS sedan range as aserious player in the enthusiast luxury sedan category, againstformidable competitors from Audi, BMW, Infiniti, and Mercedes. Now withV-6, V-8, and AWD models, the GS covers the full segment. In spring2006, the GS will blaze new frontiers, offering the first hybrid luxurycar and the first rear-drive hybrid. In doing so, the GS will adhere tothe same model positioning philosophy as with the RX400h sport/utilityvehicle - put the hybrid at the top of the range with more features andpower than the second-best model. While final numbers are yet to bereleased, Lexus announced that the 450h will boast more than 300horsepower, enabling 0-60 mph sprints under six seconds. The powertrainteams a 3.5L V-6 engine with a permanent magnet electric motor, creatingthe motive force attributed to larger engines in the segment. The mathbreaks down to simply: V-8 power with four-cylinder fuel economy. In ayear, the marketplace will judge if this adds up to a runaway success.
