While the Freelander was not the hoped for sales success stateside, it was a significant product line for Land rover, especially in Europe. To capitalize on the success of thesenior Land Rover models, the new LR2 clearly is influenced by its larger brothers. Powered by Volvo's new 230-horsepower 3.2-liter in-line six, the LR2 will get this power to the ground via a transversely-mounted six-speed automatic with manual capabilities with standard four-wheel-drive and the Terrain Response borrowed from the LR3. It should go without saying that it faces touch competition in the small SUV marketplace from the new BMW X3 and the Acura RDX as well as established players in the category, including the less expensive, best selling Jeep Liberty.
