The MR2 Spyder sees no significant changes other than one: After 20 years in production, it will be discontinued after 2005. Nonetheless, it's going out in an impressive way, snagging a Best Overall Value award. Given that the MR2 is a sports car with a reputation for dependability, being affordable is simply icing on the farewell cake. This fun, spirited mid-engined roadster is in rare company, offering a Porsche Boxster-type configuration at an entry-level price. The entertaining drive experience begins with the 1.8-liter/138-horse four-cylinder from the Celica GT and continues with a six-speed clutchless sequential manual transmission (SMT) or five-speed manual gearbox. A limited-slip differential is available with both transmissions, and quick rack-and-pinion steering adds to the responsive handling. This powertrain, coupled with independent suspension, makes the roadster as responsive as it is quick. Standard features include a six-disc in-dash CD changer, power windows and locks, and sport seats with four-way adjustability. Leather interior packages are optional. Other standard features that add appeal include aluminum alloy wheels, drilled aluminum sport pedals, a leather- or chrome-wrapped gear shifter, and cruise control for the SMT. Safety comes in the form of driver and passenger airbags, ABS, and side-door impact beams. Although it will soon be history, the MR2's excellent value rating and five-year ownership cost of up to $4,000 less than that of the competition add to its legacy.
