2005 Best Overall Values of the Year

IntelliChoice aggregates and analyzes data from auto manufacturers, the U.S. government, and third-party data resources to determine the actual costs of ownership of new vehicles over a five-year period and assign a value rating to more than 1,700 mainstream vehicles sold in America. This insightful value rating factors the accumulated ownership costs of depreciation, maintenance, repairs, fuel, fees, financing, and insurance to identify the true standout models in each class.

IntelliChoice's Best Overall Value of the Year (BOVY) awards recognize those vehicles whose cost of ownership is significantly lower than expected relative to that of its peer models, thus assisting consumers in making smart purchase decisions. These vehicles are not just excellent values, they are the top-ranked models in their respective classes. While there are many factors to consider when buying a new vehicle, the BOVY winner's list provides a quick reference to distinguish those vehicles on the market that promise the best return on investment.

This year, from the vehicles it analyzed, IntelliChoice has identified 38 winning models for segment and class accolades. Representing the popular segments within the car, SUV, truck, and van categories, these numerous classes ensure that you will find an award relevant to your new-vehicle search. While the awards are featured in our online buyer's guide by model, it's important to look at the trim levels for the complete financial picture, as there is variance within almost every model range regarding value.

Once again, this year, two brands appeared dominant across most segments, with Honda and Toyota (including Lexus) brands taking a total of 26 categories, from compact cars to minivans. Their dedication to quality and refinement sees these respected automakers offering vehicles with strong resale values, impressive fuel economy, and low-maintenance costs.

One significant change from previous years is the absence of the Honda Accord as a Best Overall Value winner. Though most Accords sit solidly in their class with an Excellent rating, it was not quite enough to push past the Volkswagen Passat GL TDI sedan (introduced late last year), which secured the number-one spot in the Midsize Class Over $21,000 segment. This can largely be attributed to a higher retained value over five years. The Passat also claimed the Midsize/Large Wagon class, again in turbodiesel form. Honda did manage to own the minivan and small-car categories, with the laudable Civic taking home three BOVY segments, as it did for 2004.

The full-size truck segments were again dominated by the Chevrolet Silverado, which picked up six awards, including Best Truck Value Over $26,000. Although it is the oldest-running full-size pickup on the market today, the Silverado continues to offer a strong, competitive product, reflected in both its popularity and resale values. Toyota also managed to grab both awards for compact trucks with its compelling Tacoma. Larger and more powerful than the truck it replaces, the new Tacoma stands atop its competitive segment by all measures.

It should be mentioned that due to the transient nature of vehicle-manufacturer-offered rebates, such short-term incentives are not included in the annual calculations for Best Overall Values. However, IntelliChoice repeats this analysis on a monthly basis to include recently released models, and to account for updated fuel costs, pricing changes, and nationally available rebate programs. The vehicles that stand out on a monthly basis are dubbed "Best Deals of the Month" and are featured on the IntelliChoice.com home page.
