The Explorer ranks average in vehicle theft, but Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins plague this generation. Most notably, the much-publicized Firestone tread-separation/rollover debacle, affecting Explorers with certain ATX or Wilderness A/T rubber. Early models were recalled for front anti-roll bar link fractures, defective driver-door latches, throttle bodies that could ice up in cold climates, binding cruise-control cables that wouldn't allow the system to disengage, and incorrectly welded liftgate brackets.
Some later Explorers (1998 and up) experienced problems with the General Electronic Modules (causing the wipers, interior lights, and four-wheel-drive system to become inoperable), misprogrammed speed limiters, defective brakeline fittings, hood latches that could prematurely corrode, over-sensitive side-airbag sensors, and improperly heat-treated seat-buckle assemblies.
Finding a good Explorer is a fairly hit-and-miss proposition. Some have repair records a mile long, while others are absolutely trouble-free. Before you take one home, be sure to check the vehicle's history through carfax.com or have a dealer search the vehicle's records. Whether you're looking for a first SUV or family-mover, a well-sorted pre-owned Explorer offers great bang for the buck, cargo carrying, and towing capability.
