Amazes: Where else are You Going To Find Can-Am Racers Parked Next To Stanley Steamers?

Text Size

Bill Warner, his wife, Jane, 300 dedicated volunteers, and the Ritz-Carlton resort in Amelia Island, Florida, know how to host a car party. Entering its second decade, this unique, somewhat irreverent show goes beyond the normal concours-style gathering. The grounds are spectacular, the field numbers around 300, and nearly anything goes. Warner is a racer, and each event honors a legendary driver. This year's grand marshal was three-time Indy champ Johnny Rutherford. The roundup of Can-Am cars went from the recently restored Lang-Cooper--one of the earliest--to Paul Newman's Honker II to Dennis Hulme's intensely orange big-bore McLaren. Other classes ran the gamut from grand prewar duPonts to pint-size microcars. Another theme was alternative power, so steam cars, a coal-fired Citroen, and even a propeller-powered machine gathered next to spectacular Ferraris, great American woodies, and Rutherford's Indy winners. Something for everyone. And then some.
