When Porsche launched the Boxster here in mid-1997, it was only the sixth entirely new vehicle platform the company had ever brought to market, and it remains a strong seller and remarkably fresh from a dynamics standpoint. Thus, Stuttgart's engineers treaded lightly when it came to upgrading the base Boxster and edgier Boxster S for 2003.
Both models receive a boost in power (8 hp for the base, and 6 for the S), thanks to a new VarioCam system, allowing intake cam angle adjustment by up to 40 degrees. The result is more power off the line, crisper throttle response (especially in the S), a reduction in fuel consumption, and lower emissions. The base car now has more low-end punch, which had been lacking, and the S creeps ever closer to 911 territory. As before, manual gearboxes are standard fare (five cogs for the Boxster and six for the S version), with a Tiptronic S autobox optionally available on either.
In the handling department, base Boxsters receive springs and dampers from the current-generation S, providing a sportier ride, yet without jolting occupants over unruly roads. Not to be outdone, the 2003 S version gets larger anti-roll bars and upgraded tires that give it an even more slotcar-like feel in the twisties and sharpens the steering response in the process.
The best news comes in the convertible-top department. As we noted in our 2001 Porsche Boxster S One-Year Test, the plastic rear window fogged easily. Porsche engineers redesigned the drop-top by adding a fourth roof bracket to enable the use of a heated glass window.
Morphing from full weather protection to al fresco mode takes just 12 seconds. Fresh front-and rear fascias, side air intakes, rear spoiler, and smoke-colored directionals make up the discrete exterior changes.

The early Boxster interior was awash in cheapish materials and switchgear. The original S received improvements, and '03 brings yet more 911-ish componentry. As before, the seats hold driver and passenger in place during aggressive cornering, yet prove superbly supportive for long stints behind the wheel. Cars are arriving in dealer showrooms this fall, and pricing for both models remains unchanged from last year -- though thrill levels continue to increase.
