In the world of supertuned street cars, braking modifications are now nearly as common as engine tweaks (five of the six cars tested here had larger-than-stock brakes). With its 13.0-second turn of the 0-100-0-mph trick, John Lingenfelter's well-balanced Corvette bested the mythic 14.0-second blast of the '65 Shelby 427 Cobra by a full second. Few if any cars can match the Corvette's 8.8-second acceleration from 0 to 100, with its astounding slam back to parked in only 4.2 seconds.
Of the six cars in this test, the Hennessey Viper Venom 600 gets to 100 mph the quickest, performing the trick in only 8.3 seconds. However, with its hefty front weight bias and non-ABS brakes, the Hennessey also took the longest to reach a dead stop again (5.3 seconds). The Kenne-Bell Mustang Cobra, with its oversize Baer Racing Alcon disc brakes, hauled itself down the most rapidly (4.1 seconds), despite nose dive that had the front spoiler scraping the ground. The TechArt 911 exploited its rearward weight bias to produce the second shortest 100-0-mph stopping time (4.2 seconds) and combined that with an outstanding 9.4-second blast from 0 to 100 mph. Considering its 5000-pound mass, the RENNTech Mercedes' stop from 100 mph in only 4.4 seconds should have the physics textbook publishers soon announcing revised editions.
