Mercedes-Benz has confirmed recent rumors that it has been working on a four-door convertible with the announcement of the Ocean Drive Concept. The four-door convertible will be making its global debut early next month at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show.
At first glance the Ocean Drive looks simply like a decapitated S600, but it is far more than that. It has unique bodywork featuring a large grille that is integrated into the hood, unique LED-based headlights and taillights, and door handles that are flush with the bodywork.
The Ocean Drive's power operated soft-top stows behind the rear seats. Mercedes' neck-level Airscarf heating system is fitted onto all four seats and allows comfortable top-down driving in colder weather.
Mercedes hasn't said anything about a production model, but they are calling the Ocean Drive a "design study" rather than simply a concept. The decision will likely be made based on how the vehicle is received by the public. Should Mercedes decide to build the Ocean Drive, it will be the first production four-door convertible since the 1960s.
