Finally, once again, Chevy has a Malibu that deserves the name. This may be the most desirable Malibu since the last time a Texan-LBJ-was in the White House. The 2008 Malibu, unwrapped at the Detroit show, is based on the same revised Epsilon platform as the Saturn Aura. It rides on the longer Epsilon wheelbase, 112.3 inches, up from the current car's 106.3-inch wheelbase (the longer, ungainly Maxx has been axed).
While the slightly more upscale Aura is V-6 or hybrid only, the Malibu launches later this year with a choice of Ecotec four or 252-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engines. Taking a lesson from last year's steep gas prices, GM won't link engine choice to trim level, meaning consumers will be able to choose a topline LTZ with the more economical Ecotec four if they desire.
The new Malibu's clean, crisp styling reflects the new direction of Chevy. It's reminiscent of the glory years of the 1960s, but isn't the least bit retro. Inside is an all-new, roomier interior that'll be available in a couple two-tone-trim combinations.
Chevy also may offer the Malibu with the smaller, 2.8-liter high-feature V-6, and hybrid and SS versions are likely.
