Jaguar isn't letting its much-maligned X-Type die quietly, instead incorporating nearly 500 new components into the 2009 model, improving the interior and molding the exterior very subtly in line with the XJ flagship and the upcoming XF. And -- for the 2.2 diesel model sold in Europe anyway -- Jag is introducing a new six-speed automatic transmission with a sequential shift feature.
For better or for worse, you can't miss the new Jaguar growler emblem set within the mesh grille of the 2009 X-Type. Updated front and rear fascias inject some sport-themed DNA into the mix, while turn signals mounted in the rear view mirrors add a touch of class. But ultimately, it's still very similar to the X-Type critics have come to love/hate since 2001.
Many of the changes are found inside the cabin. While the interior still has a traditional Jaguar vibe, it can be ordered with piano black or carbon fiber-like trim in addition to wood trims like the new, dark Rosewood veneer. The instrument cluster now resembles what's coming on the XF and is joined by a host of other changes, including enhanced Bluetooth connectivity, new materials for the headlining and pillar trim, and a Tungsten metallic finish for the air vents.
The engine offered for the U.S. model will likely continue to be 3.0-liter six, which pumps out a respectable, though far from class-leading 227 horsepower. Although the X-Type has never truly caught on in the U.S., more than 250,000 have been produced worldwide. The latest updates bring the car a little closer to the class benchmarks while still making the most of the X-Type's classic Jaguar charm. The car goes on sale starting next March in the U.K. and April in Europe.
Recent reports have surfaced that the X-Type will be discontinued for the U.S. market after the 2008 model year, although there is no official word yet from Ford or Jaguar.
