The next-generation Subaru Impreza WRX STI is set to make its world debut along with the latest iteration of its archrival -- Mitsubishi's Lancer Evolution X -- later this month at the Tokyo motor show. The hot hatch has been spied recently ripping around the Nrburgring with minimal camouflage, so these new official shots merely put together the last few missing exterior pieces.
Separating the STI from its WRX sibling are a new mesh grille, aggressive fender flares, and shortened overhangs -- the STI is 6.5 inches shorter than the WRX, but 2.1 inches wider. There are also a more aggressive fascia, rear spoiler, and a wheelbase that's reportedly a smidge (only 5 mm) longer. On the inside are constant reminders of the vehicle's special-edition intentions, with STI badges littered throughout the cabin and sport bucket seats -- more than likely a set of Recaros as was the case on the previous edition.
Like Mitsubishi, Subaru is jumping on the acronym soup bandwagon with systems such as SI-DRIVE (Subaru Intelligent Drive), DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential), and VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control), all of which combine with Subaru's Symmetrical AWD in an effort to maximize handling capabilities. Unlike the new Evo, however, there's no fancy dual-clutch gearbox. A six-speed manual remains the only gear selector available.
Though power and weight specs are still officially under wraps, a recently leaked brochure reports the STI's 2.0-liter flat-four to make 304 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque and the car's curb weight as 3263 pounds without the optional BBS wheels and about 20 pounds lighter without the upgraded rim package.
