Although it doesn't require a special facility or even that much room, the new Motor Trend Total Performance Test, or Figure Eight, combines maximum acceleration, gear changes (up and down), maximum braking, transition into and out of maximum cornering, in two directions. It's gratuitous, yes, but it informs us a great deal about each cars' total performance package and what you, as a driver, could expect to experience behind the wheel. A "best performance" can be expressed in any number of ways. However, we chose to cite a best flying lap time and the car's resulting cumulative lap-average g-force, which includes values for acceleration, braking, left and right skidpads. Remember there are points along the figure eight where there's effectively 0.00g force being exerted, and this, too, figures into the lap average.
