Gym Dandies: Welcome to the new Golden Age of American Muscle
2008 DODGE CHALLENGER SRT8
Dodge is playing this one strictly old-school. Its styling is incredibly faithful to the original 1970 Challenger's, though the new one has sprouted B-pillars en route from concept to production. Launching this spring, the 20083/4-model Challenger SRT8 gets a 6.1-liter, 425-horse SRT Hemi backed by a pistol-grip automatic with Autostick shifting, with Brembo brakes and all the other Charger SRT8 goodies, for $37,995. The options list is short: $950 sunroof, an $890 MyGig stereo, and $50 high-performance tires, plus a choice of three colors-Hemi Orange, black, or silver. Pre-orders began in early December and now top 6000. Regular 2009 production will add a cooking-grade 5.7-liter Hemi and the option of a six-speed manual. A high-output 3.5-liter V-6 is expected, but won't help much with that 35-mpg target.
SUM UP: A baby-boomer time machine with a new-car warranty.
