Like other DEW98-based cars, the XJ will feature upper and lower control arms at each corner, though the rear benefits from a dynamic damping setup. A new traction control system will use in-wheel sensors to detect slip for greater safety and handling. The new lightweight aluminum frame design reportedly drops a significant 400 pounds from the current model's weight. For greater structural stability, it features high-tech aerospace adhesives and rivets (a la Lotus Elise and Aston Martin Vanquish) instead of welds.

An assortment of new engines is promised, starting with a 3.3-liter/250-horsepower V-6 to be shared with Ford family members Lincoln and Volvo. A 4.3-liter/300-horsepower V-8 and a supercharged 400-horsepower counterpart will provide additional go power for frisky Vanden Plas and XJR models. It's been suggested that a direct-injection turbodiesel may appear in some markets.

The current XJ Series oozes with luxurious touches like Connolly leather and burl-walnut trim, numerous safety and security features, and generous comfort and convenience items. In its attempt to compete high in this market, we can safely expect the next-generation model to exceed such amenities, with more integrated electronic and communication features.

The XJ Series goes on sale in the UK as a 2003 model, with the big cat hitting American shores not long thereafter. Look for basic XJ V-8 models to enter the premium sedan fray initially, followed by Vanden Plas and XJR variants the following year.
