2008 Motor Trend Car of the Year: The Contenders

Scion xD: Less Wedge-More Punch

Let's face it, the xA didn't exactly set the world on fire like the boxy xB did. (Nearly twice as many xBs were sold in the same amount of time.) A change was in order, so Scion replaced the xA with an all-new model-a small, boxy five-passenger hatch. Yes, the xB also qualifies as a small, boxy five-passenger hatch, but it and the xD are quite different. The 2008 xB is now a full foot longer, has a bigger engine, and much more interior room than the first-gen. The xD may be an attempt to appease those who don't necessarily want the xB's larger size.

The upgrade from wedge to box brings a slightly larger engine, putting out 25 more horses and 24 pound-feet more in a vehicle with overall dimensions increased by about an inch. And, oddly, with the exception of shoulder room, the xD's cabin is smaller than the xA's-and cargo volume also shrank.

Its cabin may be tight, but the design receives high praise from our editors on the ease of use of the controls, the chronograph-style instruments, and the relatively high seating position. Many judges also are impressed with the quality of materials, noting the plastics were higher grade than those found in more expensive vehicles. Scion even has a long list of cool options, such as nav, satellite radio, interior lighting, and remote start.

Despite the four's buzziness, the increase in power is welcome. However, during its time at the proving ground, judges quickly discovered the xD's limits-its stability control "beeped bloody murder" on the handling course, and it took little to make the 16-inch econo-minded tires screech in turns.

This new Scion is an xA dressed as an xB. It doesn't reflect the innovation of Scions when they first made their debut in North America and doesn't reflect a huge improvement. It has plenty of value in a fun package, but doesn't raise the bar.

What they did right: The xD's price/value equation is good. Just steer clear of the dealer accessory list if you want something close to the advertised MSRP.

Room for improvement: In comparison with the new xD, Scion's entry product is an uninteresting drive.

Bet You Didn't Know: Even though it doesn't replace the now-discontinued xA, the xD is built off an updated version of its predecessor's platform that's shared with Toyota's Yaris sedan and hatchback.

SUM UP
The xD still offers the cool-commuter attitude, but it lacks innovation and isn't that far a leap beyond what the xA was.
