1996 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Toyota Rav4 - First Drives

Handling in both RAV4 models is excellent. Although the suspension doesn't offer enough wheel travel for serious off-roading, you can chuck either model through paved corners with abandon. The long-wheelbase five-door was our favorite, providing a more supple ride and displaying less tendency to understeer than its three-door kin. The RAV4 has a full-time four-wheel-drive system, with a switch on the dash to engage the center differential lock in slicker environs.

In Euro trim, the RAV4's 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC four makes 129 horsepower (U.S. models will make 120). It's a willing revver, although the excitement wanes at about 5500 rpm-well below its 6250 redline. A crisp-shifting five-speed manual gearbox allows you to exploit its considerable midrange punch, and a four-speed automatic is optional.

Save for specific upholstery, the interiors of both RAV4 models are identical. Standard fittings include an electric sunroof and power steering, windows, and mirrors. U.S. models will have dual airbags as well, and are expected to start around $18,000. Major options include anti-lock brakes, alloy wheels, and a premium sound system.

It's for its on-road agility and verve that the Toyota RAV4 will be hailed. This is about as close as a 4x4 has ever come to offering carlike handling and road holding.
