It was a classic duel. The front-running Ferrari 512, driven by Mario Andretti and Arturo Merzario, retired early. Porsche's new 917s were fast, but they struggled. With three-quarters of the 12 Hours of Sebring in the books, Peter Revson and actor/racer Steve McQueen took the lead in an outgunned, but reliable, Porsche 908. Ferrari Team manager Mauro Forghieri had other ideas; he put Andretti behind the wheel of the remaining factory Ferrari and sent him off into the night. Mario had to catch and pass Revson--twice--but pulled it off and won by less than 24 seconds.
Harry Hurst was a teenager and one of the track's official photographers at that legendary enduro, and he's self-published a book, entitled "12 Hours of Sebring," chronicling the event. Just as 2005 brings a new Mustang, so did 1971. Ford's reborn pony will be around awhile, but the September 1970 issue of Motor Trend was filled with car names that no longer exist--Duster, Road Runner, Pinto, Maverick, Cougar, Comet, Cyclone, Javelin, Hornet, and Matador.
