Class Action: Premium Luxury Sedan Comparison
Handling proved exceptional -- especially for such a big car. The A8 L posted the group's second-best slalom time at the test track, and its surgical steering earned thunderous praises from everyone (our test vehicle carried 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires -- a $1150 option).
In our tricky handling loop, the Audi was a class of one. "Unbelievably athletic in spite of its considerable length," wrote one editor. "Claws through curves with poise and confidence, and the traction control seems perfect -- you can hear it making small adjustments to the power as the car slides." Noted another editor: "I expected nothing but gross understeer, but this thing is so beautifully balanced I could actually drift it through fast sweepers. It certainly doesn't feel heavy when you're pushing it." An excellent six-speed automatic -- which astutely holds a lower gear when you're gunning hard -- and huge, fade-free brakes (60 to 0 in just 116 feet) only added to our merriment in the twisties.
The Audi's infinitely variable adaptive air suspension, which in automatic mode delivers a limo-smooth ride that firms up instantly when the car is driven more aggressively, provides a splendid balance of comfort and control. "A superb highway cruiser," noted one logbook entry. "Solid, tight, responsive, yet not overly isolated." Quite simply, the logbook overflowed with accolades for this new Audi. Summed up one editor: "The best combination of confidence-inspiring performance, modern design, and sophisticated luxury in this class. A thoroughly fabulous piece."
To think that a high-performance S8 version is on the horizon gives us goosebumps.
