Motor Trend's '99 Sport/Utility of the Year winner, the Lexus RX 300, continues to remind the staff why it deserved to be the first vehicle to claim the new award. Striking a desirable balance between truck-based SUV abilities and car comforts, the RX 300 hits at the heart of what 95 percent of near-lux buyers want 95 percent of the time. The formula has catapulted Lexus sales ahead of competitors, and it has left us with little to fault. Yuppie Pokemoms appreciate the near-minivan-like interior, with useful storage behind the three-across bench.

However, being a leather-lined coach, the little Pokemonsters need to be monitored to protect the interior from flying gummy worms and Happy Meal debris fields. The distinctive dash has met some criticism from a couple old-schoolers who find the angles and video display a little too 21st century for their tastes, but others find the styling inside and out to successfully push the boundaries. The optional moonroof causes too much wind noise at speed to leave it fully open, however the air conditioning is effective. Extra credit is given to the suspension, which does an admirable job soaking up urban potholes and expansion joints.
