'95 Porsche 911 Carrera 4Resident Porschephiles have continued to appreciate our wonderfully crafted long-term 911 C4, pushing the odometer well past 23,000 miles. Traveling this distance with the tach perpetually in the red has taken its toll on the tires, again. We ordered a complete set of Pirelli P Zero radials (205/50ZR17 fronts and 255/40ZR17 rears), from Discount Tire Direct. After the new rubber was mounted locally, our cost totaled $1100.74. While this dealt a serious blow to the operating cost, the tire expense has been somewhat offset by the car's sparse 15,000-mile maintenance schedule, though it also seems to require a quart of synthetic oil every 1300 or so miles. The usually insightful and humorous comments in the logbook have become redundant, as the staff has been unable to discover new faults, shortcomings, or wear-and-tear concerns. Gas mileage varies considerably, with one driver reporting a best of 26.5 mpg on the highway, courtesy of the sixth gear, then returning 15.2 mph during an extended city cycle. Like any athlete, the 911 C4 consumes more energy when it's training hard. And like a true pro, our Speed Yellow Porsche isn't happy unless it's breaking a sweat.
