It wasn't easy, but we resisted the urge to order a VW New Beetle when it was first launched. A higher-performance turbo version was too appealing to succumb to Beetle Mania with the 2.0-liter/115-horsepower base engine. Boy, are we glad. The highest evolution of Motor Trend's '99 Import Car of Year currently available, the turbo injects a serious dose of fun into a clever, smile-inducing package. In GLS 1.8T trim, the Beetle is loaded with standards, such as anti-lock brakes, traction control, air conditioning, cruise control, power locks/windows/mirrors, keyless remote, six-speaker AM/FM/cassette stereo, and a rear spoiler. A few extras to the basic package, including alloy wheels ($310) and dealer-installed CD changer ($295), pushed the price up to $20,130 as tested. From behind the wheel, the cuddliest car on the market is more peppy than ever with the eager turbo at your command. We look forward to a year of fun and games in our award winner.
