2002 Mitsubishi Lancer

Mitsubishi's Mirage has had a tough time winning buyers, playing against class leaders like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. The current car is showing its age, and its most powerful engine delivers just 111 horses. All that changes with the introduction this August of the new-from-the-tires-up '02, which also assumes the platform's global nameplate: Lancer.

The entry-level Mitsu's square-rigged four-door-only design looks more substantial than its predecessor. The Lancer rides on a 4-in.-longer wheelbase; overall length is up 3 in. It's substantially roomier, front and back, and the interior is made of better materials. The Lancer will be sold in three editions: base ES, the higher-lux-flavored LS, and the sporty OZ Rally. The last enjoys a more aggressive fascia, aluminum-look interior trim, and OZ alloy wheels, but ironically there's no performance upgrade. Its standard 2.0L DOHC four delivers about 125 hp.

Driving a preproduction prototype evidences a wholly more competitive player. It's quieter, smoother, and generally feels more upscale than the old Mirage. Ride has improved too, and acceleration feels more in line with the competition. Price range will be $14,000-$18,000; the well-equipped OZ model should cost about $16,000. And what of an all-wheel-drive turbo Evo VII version for the U.S. to compete with Subaru's new Impreza WRX? We hear that it's bound for our shores complete with a 275-hp engine.
