Lexus has never been a company to rest on its laurels. The all-new LS 430 is a case in point. As good as the previous LS was, and as well as it continued to sell, Toyota's uptown brand has advanced its full-size sedan in about every way possible.

Slip behind the wheel, and it's evident the LS 430 was designed from the inside out. Its acre of buttery-smooth leather is beautifully installed, with nary a stitch out of place, and is nicely accented by furniture-quality wood trim. The 14-way power driver seat is far more comfortable than what's found in most homes, and outside noise stays outside. Our tester had a base price of $54,550 and was optioned up to $68,681-including a $12,505 mega-option package encompassing a nav system, Mark Levinson audio package, moonroof, rear cooler box, and simply amazing massage-equipped rear seats that will lull occupants into a happy stupor.

Under the hood is an enlarged ULEV-rated 4.3L V-8 employing VVT-i valve technology to develop 290 hp. But the new-for-'01 powerplant cranks out 320 lb-ft of twist, enough to engage the traction control and propel the Lexus to 60 mph in 6.34 sec.

Shifting duties are handled by a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, using Intuitive Powertrain Control to aid the driver in maintaining a smooth driving style. Four-wheel double-wishbone independent suspension works with airbag springs to provide a boulevard ride. Bringing the LS 430 to a halt is a low-drama affair-123 ft from 60 mph. The restrained exterior styling takes little design risks, but does deliver a 0.25 Cd (when equipped with the optional and slightly lower) air suspension.

Lexus plans to sell 25,000 LS 430s each year, and we can't see any reason it won't. The LS 430 is an exceedingly comfortable, highly equipped cruiser. It delivers a balanced, solid presence, and the high creature-feature levels that appeal to a large segment of the luxury-sedan buying market. Lexus scores a direct hit to its target.
