First Test: 2002 Toyota Camry SE V-6
Options for all models include power moonroof (generously proportioned), six-CD in-dash changer, and aluminum wheels. Leather interior and heated seats are available in all XLE grades and the SE V-6, and an in-dash DVD navigation system can be added to any XLE or SE model. Available for the first time is a driver and passenger side-front and rear-curtain airbag system, which is combined with individual seat-mounted side inflators. The front airbags are a third-generation depowered design, using electronic sensors to deploy the bags both according to the severity of an impact and the driver-seat position.

The '02's ride and handling certainly won't alienate Toyota's loyal buyership-it's smooth and quiet, with a definite ride bias. In other words, as much luxury-car feel as possible in a mid-level offering. Yet, our SE's suspension calibrations contrasted noticeably with the LE and XLE models; stiffer spring and shock damping rates, along with a higher-effort power steering provided a firmer ride and more responsive feel. Although our test numbers are little changed from the previous V-6 Camry with standard suspension, we'd recommend the SE model as a choice that gives it more of a sport-sedan personality in both style and substance.
WHAT'S NOT Horsepower lagging the competition Non-defeatable stability control Touch-screen audio controls in GPS screen |
Inside, the dash and door panels have the substantial, densely padded feel normally found in Euro sedans. We'd suggest a few ergonomic tweaks: furnish deeper front-seat cushions, bring back the previous-generation tilt wheel with a greater range of motion, add larger LEDs for the HVAC controls, and, on GPS-equipped cars, provide sound-system controls that aren't buried in user menus. We also think the power fold-out door on the GPS system, while certainly trick, may prove vulnerable to damage while in the open position. But overall, it's a competent, comfy place for you and the gang.
The new Camry appears capable of delivering the characteristics hundreds of thousands of loyal owners have grown accustomed to: Toyota reliability, quality, comfort, safety, and value. Its more aggressive look, increased roominess and feature content, and the return of a sporty SE version should only augment this car's amazing market success. If all goes according to Toyota's strategy, the latest version of America's Favorite Sedan may indeed retain its sales crown.
