2004 Chevrolet Impala SS & Monte Carlo SS

Big-torque, pushrod V-8 power is what Chevrolet Super Sport is all about. We-ive been anticipating a V-8 to twist away at the front wheels of a blacked-out Impala and/or a Winston Cup-evoking Monte Carlo since we heard about the idea several years ago. Well, it-is not going to happen-oyet-oalthough an intermediary step is on its way.

Chevy has decided to equip the -i04 Impala/Monte Carlo Supercharged SS with a blown 3800 V-6 rated at 240 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. Not gut-wrenching numbers, but a step up from the current 160- and 200-horse V-6s. More power for the people, and it-is easily available, since these cars share platforms with the Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, which already employ this powertrain package.

The supercharged Series II V-6 gets refined software for its powertrain control module for smoother, more linear delivery and virtually no lag. The engine has a direct-mount A/C compressor for less vibration and powdered metal connecting rods for better durability and reduced weight. The Monte and Impala come only with the 4T65-E four-speed heavy-duty automatic, and both get stiffer springs and shocks, 17-inch wheels, and bigger anti-roll bars. Visuals include rear spoilers, special instruments with a boost gauge, and SS badges. The Monte comes in eight colors; the Impala-othe likely volume leader-oonly in black.

Enough for real musclecar types? No. But a logical, cost-effective, powerful step in the right direction.
