2004 Mitsubishi Lancers

After the successful launch of its red-hot Evolution, Mitsubishi is seeking ways to crank more sales out of the Lancer lineup. One source of additional heat is Mitsu's new high-performance and motorsport arm, named Ralliart. At the heart of several new models is a new 2.4-liter MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing and Lift Engine Control) I-4, standard in the Lancer Ralliart, Lancer Sportback (wagon), and Sportback Ralliart. The company's first foray with variable-valve timing in a U.S.-spec vehicle produces 160 or 162 horsepower, depending on the model, and an impressive 161 (or 162) lb-ft of torque. ES, LS, and OZ Rally Lancers still carry the 2.0-liter/120-horse I-4 with 130 lb-ft of torque.

All '04 Lancers (except Evolution) get new front and rear fascias, hood, front fenders, and rear decklid. The look is more youthful than the previous model, even if it does evoke certain Pontiacs. For enthusiasts on a budget, the Ralliart editions are the news.

Both Lancer Ralliart and Sportback Ralliart get the tuner look with a unique front spoiler (plus the rear on sedans), side skirts, and foglamps. The Lancer Ralliart's 162-horsepower engine can be combined with either a five-speed manual, which benefits from improved shift linkage courtesy of the Evo, or four-speed automatic transmission; Sportbacks are available only with the automatic. With the increased power comes better braking via four-wheel disc brakes (10.9-inch front/10.3-inch rear) with standard ABS and Electronic Brake Force Distribution.

Rally-inspired suspension upgrades include a tubular three-point front strut-tower brace, increased damping rates for the struts/shocks, and increased rates for the front springs and anti-roll bar. Larger P205/50R16 all-season performance tires come wrapped around standard five-twin-spoke alloy wheels. The result is a communicative, well-balanced suspension that makes the car a joy to toss around. It delivers progressive understeer at the limit and a firm but compliant ride.
