The Leader

Okay, we know-the Camry finishes behind the Accord last October and now it places ahead...what gives? First, in October, when we stated that the Accord "edges ahead to take Round One of this epic battle," it was after a day of trudging over rough New England roads and in the absence of real test numbers and the census of four editors. So following two full days of zigzagging around the smoother, more open roads of Southern and Central California, we can now say the Camry is the ultimate package.

As in the previous Accord versus Camry clash, we were dealt an SE V-6 version, whose starchy suspenders proved more apt this time around, preferring California's ribbons to Boston's pockmarks. To that end, the Camry's sporty setup felt the most competent and confidence-inspiring over the twisty back roads of Santa Ynez, yet still plenty compliant over rough highway spots. Plus, the ultra-quick six-speed automatic with its slick manual mode made relishing the engine's sweet spot effortless.

As capable is it in the curves, displaying unmatched athleticism for a $30,000 family sedan, the Camry is perhaps most impressive in a straight line. Want to drag race that 1991 BMW M5? Go ahead-even down 42 horsepower, the Camry is 0.3 quicker to both 60 (6.2 seconds) and the quarter mile (14.6 at 96.8 mph). And, at 124 feet, it can even stop from 60 in two fewer feet.

Downsides? The Camry demonstrates a busier ride than Accord and Malibu, the latter of which also stifles more road and wind noise. The interior, although roomy, comfortable, and straightforward, is arguably the blandest of the group with its "acres of sickly gray plastic" that come across "awfully industrial next to the stylish Malibu," per St. Antoine. Plus, similar to the Altima's, the Camry's steering feels too light and anesthetized.

At 189.2 inches long, the Camry is the stubbiest of the lot and definitely feels more petite than the group's yachts, the Accord and Malibu. Nevertheless, the smallish Camry received the highest marks for back-seat comfort, a testament to Toyota's proficiency in packaging and engineering.

As St. Antoine puts it, "One year on, the Camry's still the best overall combo of speed, refinement, handling poise, room, and comfort."
