Multi-Car - Long-Term Update
'98 Nissan Altima SENissan proved that sensible sedans could be fun with the first Altima, and we're pleased to report the same holds true for the more-refined second generation. After our initial evaluation, we arranged for a long-term Altima SE to see if we would "Enjoy the Ride" 12 months later. As in previous years, the new Altima is powered by a 2.4-liter/150-horsepower DOHC four-cylinder engine in every trim level. We gravitated toward the sporty SE model for its lavish content and performance aspirations. The potent combination of sport-tuned suspension, white-face gauges, four-wheel disc brakes, decklid spoiler, and electron-sapping power equipment was hard to resist. Building on the $19,290 base price, we added leather upholstery and power seat ($1299), anti-lock brakes ($499), power moonroof ($849), and obligatory floormats ($89). Factor in destination, and the bottom line reads $22,506. So far, the majority of travel in our Altima has been the home/work commute for a handful of staffers. Nonetheless, early comments focus on the car's spry handling, lively performance, and overall fun-do-drive quotient. In essence, it's a mini-Maxima, but without the thrilling acceleration.
