Mazda has finally revealed early details and the first official photos of the long-awaited U.S.-spec version of the second-generation, 2009 Mazda6 midsize sedan. Due to arrive in late summer, the Mazda6 is said to have been specifically designed and engineered for America, which likely means the changes from the European model will go more than sheetmetal deep.
Available only as a sedan -- the wagon and liftback depart, as does the high-performance MazdaSpeed6 -- the new Mazda6 will come in three trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Two engines will be offered, a newly-developed 2.5-liter inline-four and the 3.7-liter V-6 also found in Mazda's CX-9, which makes 273 horsepower in the crossover.
Transmission options will include a five-speed automatic for the four-banger, with the V-6 receiving a six-speed auto. A six-speed manual will also be offered for both engines. ABS and dynamic stability control will be standard on all models.
Mazda says that is has made what it calls unparalleled reductions in road noise and vibrations that, along with its trademark driving dynamics and road feel, will help set the Mazda6 apart from the competition in the midsize sedan market, which only continues to get tougher.
