'99 Lexus RX 300
Winner of the first Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year award, the Lexus RX 300 marks the successful marriage of truck and car in a single do-it-all vehicle. Although we're familiar with the best-selling Lexus, we ordered a pair of RX 300s for long-term duty to run this successful hybrid through 12 months of real-world testing. Starting at a palatable $31,805, the two-wheel-drive version puts command-seating in the near-lux category, yet is priced lower than many comparably equipped sedans. We added CD changer ($1080), moonroof ($1000), pampering Premium package with leather ($1920), cargo mat ($65), and roof rack ($234) for a $36,599 total with destination and handling. For the upper end of the model range, we started with a $33,205 all-wheel-drive variant, enhancing it with limited-slip differential ($390), heated front seats ($440), CD changer, moonroof, cargo mat, and roof rack for a $38,829 bottom line. Satisfying the diverse needs of our editors, the versatile RX 300 is as easy with commuting duties as running weekend errands and seeking recreation adventures.
