Chrysler and Motor Trend teamed to host a little celebration, and guess who showed up? About 85,000 people over the three-day historic road race event. In mid-September, at the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, California, more than 600 veteran racing machines battled for top honors in 12 classes, each racing on a 2.2-mile course on the converted airfield. The Vintage Automobile Racing Association sanctioned this event as its eighth in a year-long series, and the breadth of the entry list was enough to make anyone, including seasoned automotive journalists, giddy with excitement.
Besides being a jaw-dropping day of historic racing, the event also hosted a vendor expo area, a vintage car show housed in one of the enormous blimp hangars, and several activities just for kids.
