Regarding your test of the '95 Ford Explorer XLT, entitled "Tightening Its Grip on the Number-One Spot" (April '95), I feel your title is unsuitable. Although the Explorer is improved for '95, I think it will have a difficult time holding onto the number-one spot in the SUV class. With the introduction of the '95 Chevrolet Tahoe four-door, I think the Explorer's sales will decrease significantly. The Tahoe will attract many potential Explorer buyers who want to move up to a full-size SUV. Already, it's virtually impossible to find a Tahoe that's not presold before it arrives at the dealer.

Keep in mind that there are two sides to maintaining high sales: supply and demand. The demand for SUVs is definitely there. Ford, Jeep, Chevy, and GMC Trucks all are reporting that they're selling all the Explorers, Grand Cherokees, Blazers, and Jimmys (respectively) they can make. Ford, however, has a greater manufacturing capacity, especially now with a second plant building Explorers. This means that the company can turn out more units per month. As long as the high across-the-board demand continues, we expect this advantage will help Ford retain the number-one spot in sales volume. The full-size Tahoe, even if a runaway success, will still be produced in smaller numbers than the Explorer.
