Next Ferrari F355 To Spawn Low-Buck Sibling
Although Ferrari remains characteristically mum on the project, our sources indicate the next-generation F355 platform will see a slightly smaller, less expensive spin-off for 2000. The upcoming F355, code-named F131 and due out in early 1999, will forsake the current tubular steel frame in favor of an aluminum monocoque structure. This skeleton will be shared with the new car, code-named F131B. By jettisoning the current tube frame, these new mid-engine Ferraris will enjoy material gains in strength and stiffness as well as substantial relative weight savings. While the F355 will continue to be available in Spider and Berlinetta models, the F131B likely will be offered only as a lift-top coupe.

The new F355 is expected to continue using Ferrari's existing 3.5-liter 40-valve DOHC V-8, but its slightly diminutive sibling likely will carry either a 90-degree, 2.6-liter, 30-valve or 65-degree, 2.8-liter, 24-valve V-6 under its sleek skin. Both cars will offer a choice of conventional six-speed manual gearbox or sequential six-speed with steering-wheel-mounted shifter paddles.

Isuzu Readies New Hombre And Rodeo
Isuzu plans to broaden the scope of its U.S. lineup during the next 24 months. First on the agenda is a SpaceCab version of the Hombre, shown above. Based on GM's popular compact pickup truck platform, this new variant will carry the unique Isuzu front sheetmetal and will be built at GM's Shreveport, Louisiana, truck assembly plant. Pricing has yet to be announced, but the Hombre SpaceCab should arrive at Isuzu dealers by the end of 1996. The '97 Hombre SpaceCab will be available with a new optional powertrain combination: the GM 4.3-liter V-6 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission in addition to the standard, now-mandatory 2.2-liter four with five-speed manual tranny.

Come fall 1997, the Rodeo is slated for a complete reskin. Although the current iteration's basic shape will remain, the bodywork on a '98 mule (above right, spied during hot testing) displays slightly softer contours. Narrower-section headlamps, revised taillamps, and a recontoured C-pillar give this compact sport/utility a slightly more upscale flair. While the powertrain and suspension mechanicals are almost certain to carry over intact, inside sources say the passenger compartment will benefit from an upgrade program. Several months after the Rodeo bows in, Isuzu will reintroduce the Amigo name on a new two-door, soft-top variation of the Rodeo platform. Whether it arrives as a late '98 or early '99 model remains to be seen.
