'95 Porsche 911 Carrera 4
Porsche's 911 Carrera 4 craves the open road, where each shift of the precise six-speed invites another in rapid succession, rewarding the privileged driver with gazellelike nimbleness and speed. Since its last update, our tightly engineered wundercar has served primarily commuter duty on a grueling urban loop, with only occasional grand-prix banzai runs through twisty mountain roads. Because of the strenuous city usage, we visited the Porsche dealer early for the recommended 15,000-mile service. The particle-ridden pollen filter was the single most expensive item to replace at $109.94. Changing the filters and synthetic oil, plus a thorough inspection, set us back $484.22. Another cost associated with the demanding workouts was aggravated wear on the rear tires. With a call to Discount Tire Direct, we had a pair of Pirelli P Zero 255/40ZR17 tires delivered within a couple of days for $647. A local Discount Tire dealer handled the mounting for $31.39, including lifetime balancing. We like our Carrera so much we're keeping it for another year.
