Acura NSX
A perpetual favorite among Motor Trend staffers, Acura's NSX continues to be a sports car well worth aspiring to. Although not quite as speedy as the Viper nor as inexpensive as the Corvette, the NSX's sophisticated mid-engine design, all-aluminum architecture, and impeccable quality set it well above the riff-raff. Go with the six-speed manual version (now with improved shift linkage), and you get a sweet 3.2-liter/290-horsepower V-6 that revs to 8000 rpm. Shiftless types can opt for an automatic version featuring a 3.0-liter/252-horsepower V-6 that works through a fingertip-controlled SportShift automatic. For the new year, the NSX has new perforated leather upholstery and is classified as a low-emissions vehicle.

Acura 3.2TL
Building on the success of the popular '99 model, Acura's 3.2TL returns with impressive improvements. The 3.2-liter/225-horsepower VTEC V-6 now meets LEV/TLEV emissions standards, gets better highway fuel mileage, and has more midrange power. It's paired with a quick-shifting new five-speed SportShift automatic transmission that shaves a half-second off the trip to 60 mph, which should put it in the sub-7.0-second range. A roomy, leather-lined cabin comes complete with plenty of comfort and convenience items and now includes front-seat side airbags and an improved optional navigation system that provides full coverage of the continental U.S. on one DVD.
