Daewoo Lanos
After a novel launch into the U.S. market, where Daewoo leased cars free of charge to select college students, this Korean maker has established a modest foothold in the marketplace. The company's entry-level Lanos comes as a hatchback coupe or more practical sedan. A 1.6-liter/105-horsepower inline-four coupled with standard five-speed manual transmission supplies the motive force for all variations. An optional four-speed automatic is also available. Standard equipment is surprisingly complete, including power windows, power locks, and ABS. The Lanos coupe comes in three trim levels: S, SE, and new-for-2000 Sport.
