These subjective impressions were also reflected on the test track. Despite the lowest peak horsepower and torque figures, the 328is blitzed the acceleration tests with a 6.2-second 0-60-mph time and 14.7-second quarter mile. The turbocharged C70, boasting 46 more horsepower but an extra couple hundred pounds, was a click off its pace with a 6.4-second 0-60 run and 14.9 quarter mile. The 215-horse CLK, even with an automatic transmission, wasn't far behind, stopping the clock at 6.8 and 15.2 seconds, respectively.
The handling tests were more of a mixed bag. The front-drive C70, with more aggressive 17-inch tires, ran through the slalom cones at a swift 68.0 mph, followed by the 328is at 66.6 mph and the CLK at 64.6 mph. The Volvo's front-weight bias worked against it in the skidpad, holding it to a 0.85g lateral acceleration, versus the more neutrally balanced BMW at 0.86 g and CLK at 0.83 g. All three coupes come with four-wheel disc brakes and ABS, but the stickier tires on the C70 helped it nail the emergency braking tests, hauling it down from 60 mph in a eyeball-bulging 112 feet, well ahead of the 328is' 120 and CLK's 125.
Trying to pick a single winner from this diverse trio is like trying to decide which is tastier: creamy tiramisu, tangy apple strudel, or sweet Black Forest cake. None of them disappoints, but they do have different strengths and weaknesses. In fact, our testers were split over which they favored most, depending on their individual priorities. But a consensus did finally evolve.
The sport-oriented 328is, with razor-sharp handling, steering, and general responsiveness, makes it easily the first choice for barnstorming. It boasts the lowest price, though appropriately, also the least content. Its tighter interior, however, is what made us shy away from recommending it for general-purpose duties. At the other end of the coupe spectrum is the CLK320, which sacrifices adrenaline-pumping performance for a softer, more liveable character. It rates high in safety and luxury, though its overly firm seats sacrifice comfort. Providing the best blend of all elements is the Volvo C70. Its rich, plushly appointed interior, roomier cabin, banzai-like power delivery, and sporting edge make it a good choice for all driving conditions, from mid-city commuting to backroad rocketeering. Thus, with this wide range of enjoyment, we'd opt for "tangy" over "mild" or "extra-spicy."
