1999 Lexus RX 300
Motor Trend's first Sport/Utility of the Year winner, the Lexus RX 300 lives up to the honor by setting the benchmark for the emerging class of multi-use vehicles and challenging the mainstream. Delivering on all essential sport/ute elements, the RX 300 continues to impress us with uncanny overall refinement best described as "Lexus-like." From creamy smooth powertrain and quiet cockpit ambience, to pampering passenger accommodations and 21st-century styling, the RX 300 is every bit a winner. The Lexus has earned praise for its handling poise (for a relatively tall vehicle), well-placed back support on front buckets, and interior versatility. Recurring criticisms focus on its large 40-foot turning radius, but little else inspiring negative logbook entries thus far. A strict urban cycle has kept mileage low, though right on target at 20.3, slightly above the EPA's city rating. Like most RX owners, we haven't gone truly off-roading with the long-term luxo/ute, but the all-wheel-drive system has shined during several muddy road, low-traction challenges. Minor door rattles will be corrected at the next servicing.
