First Look: 2009 Chevrolet Impala
Although the new Chevrolet Malibu is gaining traction in the U.S. market, the larger 2009 Chevy Impala still sells better (for now) than its recently redesigned stable mate.
For 2009, all Impalas get anti-lock brakes, traction control, and thorax side-impact airbags as standard equipment. Powertrain choices remain the same the 2008 Impala: standard is a 3.5L V-6 making 211 hp, and it's the most fuel efficient of the Impala engine options at 18 city/29 highway.
More power comes in the form of the 3.9L V-6 putting out 224 hp. A 303-hp, 5.3L V-8 tops the engine range. Fuel economy is respectable but would certainly be improved with the addition of a five- or six-speed automatic transmission in place of the Impala's aging four-speed unit.
With many states introducing laws banning handheld cell-phone usage while driving, Chevy now offers the option of Bluetooth connectivity (through the OnStar system). Dual-zone climate control is now standard all models, while a newly designed spoiler is an option on the LT trim level and standard on LTZ and SS models. Three new colors, an improved cupholder design, new 18-in. wheels on the SS model, and illuminated vanity mirrors for driver and passenger round out the changes.
Chevy says the Impala's prime competitors include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Taurus, and Chrysler 300C. To that list we would add the Chevrolet Malibu. It may not be capable of carrying up to six passengers, but is otherwise a worthy Impala competitor. We don't think GM will mind if the Malibu steals a few Impala sales.
