Smart-Buyer's Guide - The $25,000 Question

A Smart-Buyer's Guide To A Very Crowded Price Point

Try this scenario on for size: You're at a family gathering and Uncle Bob saunters over and says, "I'm starting to look for a new ride. Wanna spend about $25,000. What do you think I should get?" Since the $25K question is the subject of thousands of letters and e-mails we receive each year, we decided to compile a list of our picks for what's available at and below that dollar ceiling. The following pages detail what vehicles we'd suggest to our family members if they had no more than $25 grand to spend on a vehicle. We've broken the marketplace into seven categories: sedans, coupes, convertibles, station wagons, minivans, SUVs, and pickups. Each category page contains thumbnail listings of the models we feel belong on anyone's short list, plus a closer look at one particular offering that deserves special attention. We spell out the trim levels and strongest engines that get closest to the $25K limit and list EPA mileage estimates for the best engine/transmission available within that limit. In short, if you're shopping the $25,000 price bracket, these are some of the players you need to know about.-Scott Mead

{{{Honda Accord}}} EX ULEVIt's the bar all automakers aim for; consistently one of the best-selling cars in America. Add in the highest resale value in its class and strong assurance that the only trips to the service center will be for regularly scheduled maintenance, and the masses will flock to their local dealer. Such is the case for the Honda Accord.

Now in its sixth iteration, the Accord sedan is available in three trim levels: base DX, mid-level LX, or upscale EX trim. The DX has a 16-valve 2.3L I-4 generating 135 hp. Both LX and EX models come with VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) power-either a 2.3L four (making 150 hp with ULEV tuning) or an optional 3.0L V-6 (rated at 200 hp).

The Accord's exterior received a freshening for '01, with an updated front fascia and hood and new taillight and rear-decklid designs. Honda also added to the standard safety features list, with dual-stage and threshold front airbags. Side airbags are available on all models.

Designed to conquer the urban jungle, the Accord won't light many fires on a racetrack, though it is a bit sportier to drive than many others in the class. The compliant suspension and commodious interior will get you from point A to B in comfort, and fuel mileage is competitive across the range. Without a doubt, the Accord is the benchmark by which all other midsize sedans are measured.
