In the old days, a Targa roof meant a liftout panel that created a demi convertible. Porsche has fast-forwarded its own innovation into a high-tech moving roof panel system that covers its occupants in 16 square feet of glass. The front half retracts 20 inches to open a space twice the size of a 911 coupe's sunroof. Because sports-car nuts place a premium on structural rigidity, and replacing most of the roof with glass can sap it, Porsche engineers designed in structural-enhancement bracing to keep the Targa's chassis just as rigid as the coupe's.
