Allman's Tahoe
All of Allman's cars have low mileage, he points out. Allman also owns a 2007 Tahoe LT, which he rates a 7 and only has 4,000 miles. He took the seats out of the Tahoe to haul items when he goes antiquing, for example. "I like it, I like it," Allman says in his mellow manner. "It's not like a Suburban, it's not like a big, huge, heavy monstrosity. I drove a Suburban. The one that was good that I really liked was the Denali - I test drove one."
There is not just one daily driver in his house. "Honey, you've got to spread the love around, you know? Either that or buy a lot of Battery Tenders," Allman says. "Hell, everything will go bad, gas will go bad. I always put an additive in mine, too. Not every tank, but every four or five tanks. It comes from Germany and it is 100 percent straight Naphtha, which is what they make lighter fluid out of. It keeps the injectors clean and keeps the supercharger clean. It makes all the gas burn, it would be like if you had a mouth full of gasoline and you struck a match and you blew it all out."
Although Allman does not put the additive in his Tahoe, he adds, "I probably should every now and then. Back when we had leaded gas that was like the dark ages, but things were a lot simpler, you didn't have to plug your car into a machine to have it tell you what's wrong with the car."
Allman says his Shelby's engine light recently lit up and he took it back to the dealer from his home outside Savannah. "I took it over there and said my 'check engine' light's on. He calls me back that evening and says, 'Your gas cap is too tight,' I said, 'What?' He says, 'You turn it till it clicks one time.' I said, 'Come on,'" Allman laughs.
Car he learned to drive in
Allman was born in Nashville and lived there until he was nine and moved to Daytona Beach. "I saw the last race on the beach. I pedaled my bike down there." It was on these streets that he learned how to drive. "That's right, I learned how to play, learned how to shoot pool," he adds, laughing.
As Allman talks about the car he learned to drive in, he has an epiphany mid-sentence and realizes where he got his penchant for grey cars. "My mother had this boyfriend and as a matter of fact it's about the same color, wow - it just hit me, I must've gotten to love the color - he had a '59 Oldsmobile Rocket 98 charcoal grey with a black top and red interior. Man, that thing would fly for a big heavy car. Those were heavy cars back in those days."
Always longing to drive, he learned how to drive at age 12 on that Olds 98 which was a convertible, even though his mom owned an Oldsmobile 88. "She didn't let us behind the wheel that much," he says.
