22. Bob Carter
Toyota Motor Sales USA group VP, Toyota division
Rookie
Caught in the middle: Carter rose to U.S. Toyota division chief amid the surprise departures of two of Toyota Motor Sales key executives. He replaced Jim Lenz, who was promoted to replace Jim Press. Carter's replacement as Lexus chief was Jim Farley.
Why he's on this list: Carter understands the brand's place in a post-V-8, environmentally conscious world in search of energy independence. He'll lead expansion of the Prius lineup.
Challenges: Big V-8 Tundras and Sequoias in the lineup, a financial crisis that's hurting Toyota's sales as much as Chevy's and Ford's.
Bottom line: Camrys, Corollas, and Priuses are his future.
