25. Tom Stephens
GM executive vice president, global powertrain/quality
Quality and efficient engines will impress Congress
2008 Rank: 42
Why he's important now: If GM gets any kind of federal bailout, it will need to prove that it is moving toward more fuel-efficient powerplants, and that it's producing Toyota-level quality.
Evidence: Beyond the high-feature 3.6-liter, direct-injection V-6 and dual-mode hybrid trucks and sport/utilities, Stephens is in charge of the upcoming 4.5-liter diesel V-8, the new 2.0-liter diesel for Europe, the North American Chevy Cruze's 1.4-liter turbo, and, of course, Volt electric's range-extending powerplant.
Setback: GM last year canceled its Northstar V-8 replacement.
Bottom line: After Wagoner, Stephens may be the least-envied person at GM.
