He is: Co-founder of Pay-Pal and aerospace firm SpaceX. Considered a control freak, he replaced the CEO with himself in 2007. Tesla recently announced that it received $40 million in convertible debt financing, mostly from its current investors.
The next GM? Maybe current GM. Early on, Musk said he wanted to be the next General Motors. He's since admitted that the difficulties of running a car company have humbled him.
And there's this: Tesla had to lay off employees and close its Detroit office in 2008.
